Who is exempt from CVOR in Ontario?

Personal use pickup trucks with a Registered Gross Weight under 6,000 kg are exempt from CVOR requirements. Other exemptions include emergency vehicles, personal motor homes, and specific farm vehicles. However, virtually all vehicles used for commercial purposes over 4,500 kg must hold a valid certificate.

CVOR Exemption Criteria

• Personal Use Pickups: Exempt if the truck has a manufacturer’s Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR) of 6,000 kg or less and is used for non-commercial purposes.
• Commercial Threshold: Trucks, buses, and tow trucks exceeding a gross weight or RGW of 4,500 kg generally require a CVOR, costing $255 for the application.
• Vehicle Types: Ambulances, fire trucks, hearses, and unladen mobile cranes are automatically exempt regardless of weight.
